    How to Start Modeling

Most young women and some young men would love to have a modeling career. The modeling industry is probably one of the hardest fields for a person to break into. It can be very discouraging when you apply for a modeling job and are rejected, there are many people you are competing against. There are several things you can do to help you to start a modeling career.

    Pictures

It is vital for anyone who wants to start a modeling career to have a portfolio. The photos included in the portfolio should be head shots and full body shots. Modeling careers come with a wide variety of options. You may not be a runway model, but, your hands, feet or even just your lips may become hot commodities. Keep this in mind when taking photos and try to include as much of yourself in your photos.

    Freelance or Agency?

Many people decide that they will start their career on their own and not use an agency. This may be good for some modeling jobs, but, in order to move forward in the industry, it is important for you to use an agency. Modeling agencies have been around for as long as models have. A reputable agency has connections to the people you need to move your career forward. They are also vital in assessing your true value to the modeling industry.

Pictures by Email and Online Modeling Agencies

Many modeling agencies now have online websites where you can submit your pictures. Sending your pictures by email allows you to send out your information to as many agencies as possible. Getting an appointment with agencies to meet in person is very difficult. This method helps to cut down the waiting time.

    Tear Sheets

Tear sheets are the actual pages ripped from a magazine you may have appeared in. These tear sheets should be kept in the models portfolio. Tear sheets are important to show the kind of work you have done in the past and allows both agencies and clients to see what you can give them.

    Photographers in the Modeling Industry

If you are beginning to put together your portfolio and plan on having your pictures taken by a professional, try to choose a photographer who has worked in the modeling industry. They know what the agencies are looking for and can give you the best service.

Whether you are just beginning or have already put together your portfolio, remember that most agencies prefer that you submit your photos on polaroid. Finding a reputable agency is important in how your career advances. Make sure to check out any agency you may be thinking about before you sign any contracts. Becoming a model may take a long time but the benefits in the end outweigh the time it takes to "break into the business".
