in the topic Getting shots published as a freelancer... in the forum Industry Questions
Put Your Fashion Pictorial in the Public Eye Learning how to publish your photo fashion editorial spread is a good way to turn your talent for photography and your eye for beauty and fashion into a freelance business that allows you to earn a living doing what you love to do. While getting your fashion spreads in glossy magazines is challenging, hard work and talent together are the tools you need to pursue this goal. 1. Prepare yourself to pursue. You won't be able to jump right in to the big time, but you can work your way up. Start small. Work from your home and begin by submitting your photographs to as many paying markets as you can to build a portfolio of published work. Purchase a copy of the "Photographer's Market" or sign up with the "Artist's Market" to get access to submission guidelines. The "Photographer's Market" also features articles by top professionals that give advice to beginners about the business of publishing photo fashion spreads. 2. Look through the submission guidelines and select magazines that accept the type of work you do. Choose two or three of these markets and study the submission guidelines. Submission guidelines will tell you the type of photographs the magazine will publish, how much you will be paid for the photographs, how to submit your work for consideration, and where to send the work. It's essential you follow these guidelines. They vary from one magazine to the next. Following guidelines specific to each market is the way to best ensure your success. IF the fashion editor of the magazine wants you to send a selection of images in low resolution on disc, send only that type of photograph. If the editor asks for a selection of fashion shots featuring women in Brazilian-cut bikinis, those are the types of images you should send. Don't make the mistake of thinking you can send more of your work and impress the editor so much she will decide to work with you. Following guidelines is important to your success. 3. Determine which of the markets best suit you and the photographs you have to sell. There's nothing wrong with starting with top-paying glossy magazines. You can always try for smaller publications if your images don't work out with more prominent magazines. 4. The key is persistence. Don't send out samples of your work to one magazine and wait for an answer. This process can take several months or more. Choose another set of fashion photography photos and another magazine to approach with them. If you want to make a living as a freelance fashion editorial photographer, you need to create a cycle of income. This means not only submitting your work to the magazines that do the fashion editorials, but taking out other freelance assignments to help finance your freelance efforts, such as advertising photographer for clients of all types. It can take years to build a successful career as a fashion editorial photographer, but the hard work and persistence will pay off.

    Campaign Season for Fashion Models

It’s spring again, the flowers are blooming, and beauty is about to grace the runways. The fashion trade has two primary seasons, Spring and Fall. Spring refers to January through June and Fall indicates July to December. Each season features different colors and diverse styles. Winter clothing is typically part of the fall collection, and Summer garments are included in the Spring line.
Fashion Models around the globe need to become knowledgeable about Campaign Season. Campaign season is an important time because the pay for big fashion campaigns is lucrative.
It works like this: first, the runway shows display the newest designer clothes for the upcoming season. The clothes go to the showroom and buyers choose the clothes to be in their stores and the garments to go to the models who are booked for campaign shoots. The campaigns usually begin thirty days or so after the runways shows.
Models should be aware that the Fall and Winter campaigns that are shown in magazines, are shot in the Spring, and the Spring and Summer campaigns are shot in the Fall, usually around October. This information will help models in arranging appointments and auditions and in configuring the photos in their client books. Clients will coordinate their mental images for advertising their advertisements with a model’s look.

    Portfolios

A modeling portfolio is a critical tool in the interview process. The portfolio should not only show what the model has done, but also what the model is capable of doing.

    Portfolio Tips:

When putting the finishing touches on your portfolio, don’t forget the following rules:

    • Your modeling portfolio should contain only your best photos. Portfolios should showcase a model’s best work. Quality is better than quantity! You only need 5-10 photos in your portfolio.
    • Include tear sheets which showcase your best photos
    • Modeling portfolios have to be diverse. Make sure to include photos with different locations and themes, and varying angles and poses.
    • Pay special attention to the composit cards Photographers and potential clients remember each model by comp cards. The five pictures on the card should be of good quality, and should also show the model’s range.

Spring is here! Earth is your runway and the sky is your canvas. Good Luck!

    How to Start Modeling

Most young women and some young men would love to have a modeling career. The modeling industry is probably one of the hardest fields for a person to break into. It can be very discouraging when you apply for a modeling job and are rejected, there are many people you are competing against. There are several things you can do to help you to start a modeling career.

    Pictures

It is vital for anyone who wants to start a modeling career to have a portfolio. The photos included in the portfolio should be head shots and full body shots. Modeling careers come with a wide variety of options. You may not be a runway model, but, your hands, feet or even just your lips may become hot commodities. Keep this in mind when taking photos and try to include as much of yourself in your photos.

    Freelance or Agency?

Many people decide that they will start their career on their own and not use an agency. This may be good for some modeling jobs, but, in order to move forward in the industry, it is important for you to use an agency. Modeling agencies have been around for as long as models have. A reputable agency has connections to the people you need to move your career forward. They are also vital in assessing your true value to the modeling industry.

Pictures by Email and Online Modeling Agencies

Many modeling agencies now have online websites where you can submit your pictures. Sending your pictures by email allows you to send out your information to as many agencies as possible. Getting an appointment with agencies to meet in person is very difficult. This method helps to cut down the waiting time.

    Tear Sheets

Tear sheets are the actual pages ripped from a magazine you may have appeared in. These tear sheets should be kept in the models portfolio. Tear sheets are important to show the kind of work you have done in the past and allows both agencies and clients to see what you can give them.

    Photographers in the Modeling Industry

If you are beginning to put together your portfolio and plan on having your pictures taken by a professional, try to choose a photographer who has worked in the modeling industry. They know what the agencies are looking for and can give you the best service.

Whether you are just beginning or have already put together your portfolio, remember that most agencies prefer that you submit your photos on polaroid. Finding a reputable agency is important in how your career advances. Make sure to check out any agency you may be thinking about before you sign any contracts. Becoming a model may take a long time but the benefits in the end outweigh the time it takes to "break into the business".
